Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb

Dave Becker has been named as the new RE Director of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb.

Becker, who begins his duties right after the in-gathering Sunday August 28, is also a Senior Manager of Learning Experiences with the Chicago Zoological Society, the Brookfield Zoo. At the zoo he manages and oversees public learning events for children and families that include nature play, workshops, and hands-on learning experiences. He has dual degrees in Psychology and Humanities with an emphasis in religious studies.

"One of the core principles of Unitarian Universalism is that we affirm the inherent worth and dignity of every person." Mr. Becker said, "What that means is that each child in our programs is treated with great care and respect for who they are and each of their family members is also treated with respect. Every child, every family, every person is unconditionally welcome."

Dave said the religious education program at UUFD is small but growing. It is a small congregation with a lot of energy. Dave's plans for the children's religious education programs this fall revolve around the theme of giving and receiving gifts. The children will use the symbol of gifts to explore the gifts we give and receive from our community, the earth, and other religions. Each month will have a different theme, starting with those things closest to us and widening further out throughout the year. Field trips will be planned and community service projects that tie in with the themes. A song from the church hymnal has a line which reads, ' From you I receive, to you I give, together we share, and from this we live." The ideas in the song will be the core of programming this year.

"I love the imagination and strong desire to meet the needs of each child, that Dave brings to this position." said Maylan-Dunn Kenney, member of the board of trustees for the church, "his years of experience with programming for children who visit the zoo will be a great addition to our religious education programming. I hope many families take advantage of this great learning opportunity."

"We use the term lifespan development to talk about our education programs because we believe that faith does grow and change over a lifetime. "Said the new director, "In our children's programs this means that we as a congregation are committed to nurturing each child's faith development, in partnership with their families."
