Music Programs

In 1992, Dr. Toni Tollerud started the UU choir, providing accompaniment on the old upright in the lounge of Wesley Center, with a small, but mighty group of singers and the choir has continued ever since. Today the choir averages 12 singers for the 2-3 times a month at which they sing. She enjoys using drumming, guitars, bells, and a variety of instruments to add variety and uniqueness to the choir anthems. She encourages solos and small group work, and on occasion, works with the youth of the church. She selects a wide variety of music that matches the ability of the choir. "Singing should always be a successful, feel good experience." The choir has sung for weddings, holy union services for members, local gatherings, funerals, and special church events.

In April, 2004 the choir will have its first opportunity to sing at the Midwest District General Assembly opening service. Not only will the UUFD choir perform alone, but will blend its voices with at least 8 other UU congregations in a mass choir performance. It should be very exciting.

In 2003, Toni was asked to serve the Unitarian Universalist Musicians Network (UUMN) as a "good offices" person. A "good offices" person is an advocate for a particular professional group in the church who may have questions or need assistance in their role. As the good offices person for the Midwest District, Toni is available to musicians, music committee members, or others associated with music in their churches if they need someone to talk to, have questions about financial reimbursement, or experiencing difficulty in relationships. Toni has been through training to perform her duties. Most of this work is handled by phone, but there may be occasion to make a personal call on a colleague. All work is confidential. The UUMN now have "good office" persons covering every district in the nation. The next step is to get the word out to the musicians that this service is available to them.
